TAKE CONTROL OF ACNE WITH DERMALOGICA
Continuing on for the last news post, it is time to take back control of your acne with Dermalogica, and heres how:
just to recap: Acne is a very common skin condition that can affect most people at some stage in their life. Many teenagers suffer with acne during puberty as their bodies undergo hormonal change but teenagers are not the only ones affected by it. Acne can occur for the first time in adults in their late twenties or even thirties.
Acne occurs when hair follicles become blocked. Sebaceous glands are found near the surface of your skin which are attached to hair follicles. Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum which lubricates the hair and skin to stop it drying out. Acne is caused when too much sebum is created. The extra sebum combined with dead skin cells forms a plug in the follicle. If the plugged follicle is closer to the surface of the skin it bulges outwards creating a whitehead. If the follicle is open to the skin it creates a blackhead. Harmless bacteria on the skin can then contaminate and infect the plugged follicles and cause papules, pastules, nodules or cysts. There is no complete cure for acne but different treatments are available depending on the severity.
In most cases self-help techniques can help manage or prevent acne such as:
- Not washing your face more than twice a day as frequent washing may irritate the skin and make symptoms worse.
- Using a mild cleanser with warm water.
- Not squeezing spots
- Not using too much makeup
- Removing all makeup before bed
- Using a water based emollient that’s fragrance free for any dry skin
- Showering after a workout so the sweat does not irritate acne
- Washing hair regularly and keeping it off the face
Acne can be treated with over the counter products or by prescribed products if it is more severe. Treatments may take months before the effects are seen.
Some treatments for acne are:
- Benzoyl peroxide cream or gel which prevents dead skin blocking follicles and kills bacteria on the skin.
- Topical retinoids can come in cream or gel form and reduce the production of sebum.
- Antibiotics can either be applied to the skin or taken orally as a tablet. This controls surface bacteria.
- Hormone therapy may be helpful for some women with acne. A contraceptive pill may be recommended.
Teenage acne occurs due to increased levels of testosterone during puberty. The sebaceous glands are very sensitive to hormones. The increased level of testosterone causes the sebaceous glands to produce increased levels of sebum. Breakouts are the biggest skin concern for teenagers. There are many choices of skin care products however, most of them contain harsh and inexpensive ingredients. These can irritate and strip the skin of oils thus causing more problems.
Dermalogica offer the Clear Start range to help teens get clear skin by combining powerful ingredients with botanicals to deliver real results. Clear start products are formulated to unclog pores, minimise bacteria and control oil. This range helps teens reveal clearer skin.
More than 80% of adult acne occur in women. Many cases of adult acne are caused by changes in hormone levels that many women have at certain times such as menstruation, pregnancy or polycystic ovary syndrome.
Other possible triggers of acne could be cosmetic products – so it’s best to use products that are non-comedogenic. Certain medications may also cause acne.
Most products and treatments are designed for teenage acne making it too harsh and irritating for adult acne. Active Clearing (Medibac Clearing)helps treat, clear and prevent adult acne while still addressing the needs of adult skin. The ingredients in the Medibac range help inhibit the activity of overactive sebaceous glands, controls cell accumulation, controls bacteria on the skins surface and in the follicle and helps keep inflammation caused by adult acne under control.
Acne can lower self-esteem and sometimes even cause depression.
Don’t let acne take control of you – choose products that work best for you and take control of your skin by keeping acne at bay.
