About oily skin
Those with oily skin traditionally experience the most oiliness in areas 1,3,7 and 12, sometimes known as the T-zone, because more sebaceous glands reside in these areas.
If your skin type is oily then you will never be able to change this skin type. However, with the correct skincare regimen you can control the excess oil production without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
With an oily skin exfoliation is key, as your oily skin can hold onto dead skin cells that naturally want to exfoliate. These trapped dead skin cells can build up making the skin look dull and cause breakouts due to bacteria build up.
Exfoliation should be carried out 2/3 times weekly.
Top tips for oily skin
Stay away from harsh stripping alcohols that make your skin feel tight. These will only encourage your skin to produce more oil as a protective mechanism.
Use a clay-based cleanser to help mop up oil on the surface of the skin. Remember Dermalogica’s Dermal Cay Cleanser can double up as a masque.
Use a moisturiser. Most people with oily skin avoid moisturising, however it is really important to keep the skin hydrated. Use a Dermalogica oil free moisturiser and toner to provide hydration and control oily shine throughout the day.
A lot of people think that UV helps clear up their skin. When we expose our skin to UV it will initially dry up our sebaceous glands causing a temporary quick fix. When we return to our normal climate, however, our sebaceous glands go into overdrive to replace the lost oils, therefore causing breakouts.
